Exploring Faith

"Building deep relationships - with God and with each other." - L.F.

"The possibility of our lives being changed." - M.N

"Exploring with our heads and with our hearts!" - R.B.

"Living something new!" R.T.

That's what Exploring Faith is about.

Sunday Worship

Print

Our Sunday morning worship gathering begins at 10:00am, in the Worship space. Individuals, couples and families are invited to gather together in the worship space for a time of music, prayer and discussion. About 20 minutes into the worship time, any children who are interested are welcome to join with loving teachers for Children's Church. (Children who would prefer to remain with their families are quite welcome to remain in the worship space!) The church is wheelchair accessible and there is a "hearing assist" system in place. We're hoping that any and all people will feel welcome.

In the front entry there's a coffee pot, hot chocolate and name tags - people are welcome to pick up what they'd like and head into the worship space.

Our music is quite varied. At times we sing "traditional" hymns of the church, other times we sing newer worship music - much of it with a world beat. Our minister works to include music from contemporary pop and indie musicians in our worship times, as well. People are welcome to sing if they want to, or simply relax and listen to the lyrics and music around them. Lyrics are printed on a screen at the front of the church, with printed scores available for people who find it helpful to have the music in their hands.

Worship is lead by members of the congregation and our minister - Richard Bott. When it comes to exploring scripture in a contemporary context, he uses a conversational style, with storytelling and drama inviting the congregation to dive deep into the texts... and to have fun in the journey. As people come into worship, they're given an announcement sheet that includes "The Review" - a space to jot down notes, questions or comments about what they are hearing and experiencing. After the worship service, people are invited to find the minister and chat. (As he puts it, "Come and share with me what you've heard - those places where you agree and where you disagree. It's the best way for me to keep learning!)

Scripture Chat

St. Andrew's, like many congregations in The United Church of Canada, follows the Revised Common Lectionary to choose which scripture will be the Sunday worship focus. The Scripture Chat group gathers to discuss the reading that will be shared on the upcoming Sunday. Don't worry if you don't have extensive - or any - knowledge of the Christian and Hebrew scriptures. We all pool what we do know... and search for thoughts from other sources, as well. This group meets each Monday morning, from 10:00am to 11:15am, in the Lounge.

The Book Club

The Book Club meets on the third Tuesday of each month, from 7:30 to 9pm, in the Lounge.

This group gathers to discuss good books they've read, lately - choosing a current "bestseller" for the focus of their monthly discussion. The twist? One of the questions that we ask ourselves is, "Where did we see God in the story?"

Communion

On the first Sunday of each month - and on some additional Sundays, as well - communion is part of the worship time.

The people of St. Andrew's believe that everyone is welcome at Christ's table. It doesn't matter how young or old someone is, where they've come from, where they're going; how rich they are, how poor they are; whether they're a regular at St. Andrew's or here for their first time; male or female, gay or straight, how much they wonder or how much they know; or even whether they profess a faith in Jesus Christ or not - Christ welcomes everyone to his banquet... and so do we.

It is our custom to use ordinary bread and grape juice (non-alcoholic). Rice wafers are also present for people with gluten allergies. People who wish to take part in communion are invited toward the front of the church, where they are served bread and juice (in individual cups). They are welcome to take a moment to take communion and then return to where they were sitting. For individuals who are unable to come to the front of the church, servers move into the congregation.

Baptism

Print

Baptism is the ritual ('sacrament') in the church's life where we celebrate people's committment to their faith journey.

In The United Church of Canada, baptism can take place when a child, teenager or adult makes a faith statement, or when parents or sponsers make a commitment to raise a child in a Christian context - to help them worship God and share in the mission and service of Christ. Because the congregation wil be making promises, as well as the person being baptised (or their parents on their behalf) all baptisms take place in the context of a congregational worship gathering (except in extreme situations of health.) Parents who would like their children to be baptised will be asked to meet with the minister and members of the congregation, and to explore questions about their own faith relationships - with Christ, with the Creator and with the Church.

Teens and adults who wish to be baptised will be asked to take some time to consider questions of their own relationship to God, their understanding of the commitment they are making, and what 'discipleship' meands to them. This can be through conversations with the minister, or with another member of the Church Board.
